Willow Bough – Willow Branches, Examined Leaf by Leaf
According to his daughter May, Willow Bough was inspired by a single walk. Morris paused at a willow tree beside the water and studied its branches for so long that he could accurately sketch 'the details and variation in the leaf shapes' once he got home. The result is not a decorative take on a willow but a precise representation: narrow leaves overlapping one another, supported by thin brown stems that run diagonally across the entire pattern.
Morris believed that a great pattern 'must unmistakably evoke gardens and fields'. Willow Bough does exactly that, and went on to become the most popular wallpaper ever sold by Morris & Co. – block-printed by Jeffrey & Co. and continuously in production since 1887.
On the sock, the design stayed understated: a cream-colored base matching the wallpaper’s background, with the green leaves and reddish-brown branches overlaid on top. It is woven rather than printed – the colors are embedded within the sock itself, so they will not fade.
