Pomegranate – Pomegranates, lemons and a blue sky
Pomegranate – simply listed as 'Fruit' in the Morris & Co. catalogue – is one of the first wallpaper designs William Morris created, drafted in 1865–66 and released in 1866. It is also immediately one of the most elaborate: branches of fruit trees crisscrossing one another, with split-open pomegranates, lemons, small flowers and tightly clustered leaves.
Morris opted for a naturalistic, distinctly British approach to pattern design that was new and quietly radical in his era: no symmetrical ornamental motifs, just plants as they actually grow. The wallpaper was block-printed using distemper paint, colour by colour, with a separate block for each shade.
We selected the blue colourway: a pale blue base as the wallpaper’s background, with the fruit and foliage above it in green, ochre and red. This design is woven rather than printed – the colours are embedded right into the backing and will not fade.
