Blossom Orchard – A Spring Day in the Kempen
Discover 'Verger en fleurs', our lightest design from our collaboration with the Emile Van Doren Museum in Genk. Fruit trees in full bloom, chickens scratching in the grass below, and an air you can almost smell. Van Doren painted this en plein air, with a loose touch – the blossom is more suggested than rendered.
Emile Van Doren (Brussels 1865 – Genk 1949) moved to Genk in the early 1890s and never left again. He fell in love with two things at once: the Kempen landscape and Cidonie Raikem, who ran an inn on Station Street. Together they turned it into the Hôtel des Artistes, where every traveling painter stayed. From that point on, he painted only one subject: the heath, fens, and sand dunes around Genk.
We translated the painting into knitted stitches: a moss green foot for the grass, a light blue cuff for the sky, and in between the blossoming trees with the chickens below. Woven instead of printed, right down to the loose white feathers in the grass – the colors are built into the sock, so they won't fade.
