Vincent van Gogh painted 'Starry Night Over the Rhône' in September 1888, just a few minutes away from his Yellow House in Arles. The painting shows the reflection of gas lighting on the water of the Rhône, a relatively new phenomenon at that time. Interestingly, Van Gogh, although he was looking southwest, depicted the constellation Ursa Major, which is actually only visible in the north. This suggests that he combined elements to create a more symbolic composition.
