Bog Myrtle Bloom – A Wetland That Catches Light
Discover 'La fleurison de myrica', the most atmospheric design from our collaboration with the Emile Van Doren Museum in Genk. Bog myrtle – a wet heath shrub – blooms in April and May, producing golden catkins. Van Doren painted this scene on a boggy heath: a dark color palette, royal blue strokes, light blue pools reflecting light, and above them a cloudscape he rendered with rough, sketchy brushstrokes.
Van Doren was no marginal figure. In 1892, he won the Prix Donnay, the landscape prize of the Brussels Academy, was a co-founder of the Société Royale des Beaux-Arts alongside Constantin Meunier and Fernand Khnopff, and enjoyed significant royal admiration. Leopold II purchased his work early on, Albert I and Queen Elisabeth did not miss a single one of his exhibitions, according to the museum, and King Baudouin later hung a Van Doren painting in his office in Opgrimbie.
For the sock, the design features a camel-brown base representing the peaty soil, a light blue border for the sky, and between them the pools, golden catkins and dark shrubs. The design is woven rather than printed – the colors are embedded directly into the sock, so they will not fade.
