Discover 'Resting IJssel Cattle', part of an exclusive collaboration between Kunstsokken and the Stedelijk Museum Kampen. This design is based on a work by Jan Voerman sr., the painter who spent his entire life documenting the IJssel floodplains near Hattem, earning him the nickname 'the IJssel Painter'.
Voerman was born in 1857 in Kampen as the son of a cow farmer. Cows were a constant part of his childhood; he grew up among livestock. Later, he painted those same cows from his studio home along the IJssel, with a view of the floodplains where his own herd grazed. He barely ever left Hattem in his entire life. Once, he said of his hometown: 'Who lives in paradise never wants to leave.'
The sock captures exactly the quiet calm of his work: sprawling green grass, bright summer air, and a herd of cows lying peacefully ruminating. No rush. Just the IJssel countryside, exactly as Voerman saw it, knitted from every green and blue thread.
