A barn owl stares at you intently from a gilded leather fire screen. This owl was a gift from Pauwels, a The Hague tobacconist who regularly supplied Mankes with study material. The bird was sent by post – alive – and Mankes was overjoyed.
You can see this owl recurring in several of Mankes' works. He observed the animal endlessly, until he knew every detail by heart. Eventually he asked Pauwels to stop the shipments: "the subjects are in the painter anyway, never out there." This 1913 painting is the result of that intense observation – a portrait of stoic calm and mysterious beauty.
