Discover 'Winter Landscape with Skaters', part of an exclusive collaboration between Kunstsokken and the Stedelijk Museum Kampen. This design is based on a work by Hendrick Avercamp, the first Dutch artist to specialize in winter landscapes and establish a distinct visual tradition during the Golden Age.
Avercamp grew up in Kampen. Born deaf and mute, his contemporaries referred to him as 'the Mute of Kampen'. What he could not put into words, he captured in paintings: bustling scenes filled with skaters, kolf players, merchants and children, rich and poor alike on the ice. The winter of 1607–1608 was the harshest in forty years. Canals froze solid, and parts of the Wadden Sea were covered in ice. Avercamp was 23.
On the cream-colored sock you will see exactly that: the bare tree, the figures clad in red and blue capes, the bustle of a frozen city. Fragments of a winter more than 400 years ago, knitted onto the sock with precise detail.
