Flowers burst from the vase in a wild dance of color and form. Charley Toorop did not paint what she saw, but what she felt. For her, art was a means to express the inexpressible – and in this floral still life you see her expressive, almost raw approach at its finest.
Toorop (1891-1955) was a remarkable figure in the Dutch art world. Daughter of the famous Jan Toorop, yet with a completely independent voice. She worked her entire life in an expressive-realistic style, inspired by German Expressionism and Picasso’s post-cubist work. Her ‘hard’ modelling and coarse handling of paint made her unique.
This work from the Museum MORE collection shows why Toorop ranks among the very top of Dutch realism. In exclusive collaboration we bring her powerful vision to these limited edition socks.
