Morris didn’t draw the birds himself—those were Webb’s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was his first design but only the third to be printed, and it wasn’t an immediate success. In the 1860s, people wanted wallpaper that looked spacious and lifelike; the flat, almost naive Trellis didn’t fit that trend. It has remained in uninterrupted production ever since—taste eventually warmed up to the design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cream-colored base of the paper remained as the underlayer, with the trellis, red roses and Webb’s blue birds printed over top.
