Van Gogh used a special color palette of rust tones and lilac shades here to bring this Drenthe landscape to life. The solitary tree, the still water reflecting the sky, the contours of that small hut – it may seem simple, but there is so much expressive power hidden within.
This work shows that Van Gogh's time in Drenthe was not at all dark and meaningless, as is often thought. On the contrary: here he discovered the colorful style that would later make him so famous. A perfect example of how beauty often lies in the most ordinary things.
